What is “Digital Detox”?
“Digital detox” is a period of time during which you do not use mobile phones, computers, etc. because you usually use these devices too much. It is an opportunity to reduce stress and focus more on interaction with others. “We all need a digital detox,” says clinical psychologist Lisa Strohman, Ph.D., founder of Digital Citizen Academy”. Amid the current crisis, how can you cut phone time when hours with your devices are a necessity?
What is the reason why we need Digital Detox?
While people often feel that they can’t imagine life without their tech devices, research and surveys have found that technology use can also contribute to stress. Spending lots of time staring at screens can be harmful to your physical and mental health. If you think you’re using devices a bit too much, here’s what you can do to keep things healthy:
1. Take at least 15-minutes screen time break
Although there is no fixed time between breaks or length of breaks. Take 15 minutes to be spent away from your screen. Try our suggestions:
- Track and limit your social media time – Set a time limit for yourself and detach from these platforms at the end of the set time.
- Turn off the notifications – Try turning off all the social media notifications so that you don’t feel triggered to check your Instagram or Facebook.
- Have a Phone-Free day – In your off day try to switch off your mobile so it won’t affect your official communication during this work-from-home phase
2. Plan your screen time
Give yourself a time which you won’t even touch a screen. Structuring your day can be incredibly helpful in keeping track of how much time you spend online.
Try to do “NO” Digital Devise Usage when eating meals, just woke up or going to bed, spending time with friends and families, and doing physical activities.
3. Do physical activities without screens
Instead of sitting at your screen all day, try an indoor workout. There are lots of indoor workouts you can do without a screen, like cardio, yoga, weightlifting, and jumping rope. Try substituting activities that you would normally do online physical activities.
